Anarchy Explained to Children

Anarchy Explained to Children

An extraordinary 1930s text on anarchism with all-age-appropriate illustrations and explanations of each principle.

“Help: To those who hesitate, give them encouragement: to those who despair of seeing victory far away, give them courage. Mutual help is a sacred and universal duty.”

Here is a modern book for progressive readers of all ages, featuring the prescient 1931 pamphlet 'Anarchy Explained to Children' by José Antonio Emmanuel, writing under the pseudonym Max Bembo. Emmanuel was a teacher and anarchist philanthropist who advocated, among other things, for freeing children's education from the control of the Catholic Church. In the essay, he offers the children of working-class families a simple and direct explanation of liberatory principles, along with guidance on how to put them into practice.

Following the essay, each of the principles he proposes is explained again, very simply, across a double-page spread. These are accompanied by newly created engravings that first appeared in the 2017 Argentine edition of the book, each one conveying the beauty of the world Emmanuel envisioned.

Anarchy Explained to Children will appeal to parents and educators who want to share with young readers the ideals of liberatory education: an approach in which extremism and oppression are rejected in favour of mutual support, equality, universal love, and human solidarity.

“A magnificent revived historical document that offers us another way of educating outside the oppression of the norm and the rigidity of customs. An exquisite and liberating text that invites us to share the beautiful—and revolutionary—act of reading and reflection as a family as one of the best paths to emancipation.”—Manuel Garrido (Valencia Plaza)
